The Ugly Duckling Online by L.J. O’Neal

Once upon a time a small business owner decided to build a website by herself. Although she was delighted at the birth of her new online home, she couldn’t help but be disappointed by its lack-luster appearance. It was also overlooked by all other potential customers and her website design was even made fun of by its online neighbors. This caused the business owner to become despondent at the realization that her little baby wasn’t cute at all. In fact,it was quite an ugly duckling of a website.

The small business owner tried to enlist the aid of her neighbors who claimed to know all about what it takes to build a good website. However, all she ended up with was another ugly duckling website that looked a little bit better, but still was not attractive to potential customers. She realized that her ugly duckling website needed outside help. Thus, she decided to seek help from others, but the real issue of how to become more attractive to real customers (not just onlookers) was not really addressed. Her web traffic was nil.

She then sought the aid of large ‘big box’ companies, but that made her feel that her small business was not all that important to them. Many times, she felt that she was spoken down to, especially when she didn’t totally understand all of the technological jargon about optimization of her precious website. So she decided to let her ugly duckling website be and maybe it would finally grow into something better. It didn’t happen.
